Aston Villa have reached an agreement with Joao Palhinha on personal terms, but negotiations with Bayern Munich have encountered a significant obstacle. The two clubs remain divided over the structure of the deal, according to Caught Offside.
The Premier League club is actively seeking midfield reinforcements to cover for Amadou Onana’s long-term injury. Villa manager Unai Emery has identified Palhinha as a top priority, and the player himself is eager to return to England. However, the deal remains stalled at the club level.
Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg provided an update on X regarding the negotiations between Aston Villa and Bayern Munich. « EXCL | Aston Villa are currently offering FC Bayern a loan with an option to buy for Joao Palhinha, » Plettenberg reported. « Bayern are rejecting this proposal. For now, a permanent transfer remains the priority. Personal terms between Palhinha and Aston Villa have been fully agreed for several days. Villa boss Damian Vidagany has spoken publicly. It is now only down to the clubs. Palhinha is waiting for a decision. » (Source: Caught Offside)
Bayern Munich is demanding a permanent transfer worth around €25 million to offload the 31-year-old Portuguese international. Aston Villa, however, prefers an initial loan move with a purchase option. The disagreement over the fee structure remains the only obstacle preventing the deal from progressing.
Villa boss Damian Vidagany has publicly confirmed the club’s interest in Palhinha, while the player himself is waiting for a decision. Both parties must reach a compromise before the summer transfer window closes.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United has emerged as a strong contender for Palhinha’s signature. The Magpies lost both Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães in the same transfer window, increasing their need for midfield reinforcements.
Palhinha spent the 2025/26 campaign on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, where he impressed under Vincent Kompany. The midfielder rediscovered his best form, providing a robust defensive presence and contributing 10 goal involvements across all competitions. Despite his strong performances, Spurs opted against triggering their £26 million option to make the move permanent, sending him back to Bayern Munich.
With Vincent Kompany deeming him surplus to requirements at Bayern’s Säbener Straße, Palhinha is keen to secure a fresh start. Aston Villa remains his preferred destination, but the deal’s future hinges on the two clubs finding common ground.
