Hussain vents his frustration after the third-day abandonment at Lord's in the sun

The umpires brought an early end to the third day of the second Test between England and Pakistan at Lord’s on Saturday, August 30, 2026, as the sun finally broke through after hours of rain and low light. In just 24.5 overs, England went from 81-3 at the start of the day to 177-7, building a 357-run lead in pursuit of the series win. Yet, by just after 6:30 p.m., the decision to call off the play drew loud boos from the stands. The players could have resumed play before 7 p.m., extending the session until 7:30 p.m., but the match was officially halted.

Nasser Hussain, Sky Sports pundit and columnist, was scathing in his criticism of the abandonment: “It’s a joke, frankly, a joke. An incredible decision, really. These fans have been waiting here all afternoon for the rain to stop. Now the sky is clear, blue, and in five minutes it’ll be full sunshine here.” He had earlier slammed the organisers’ inaction: “I have no idea what’s going on, and neither do the fans. This is the best break in the weather we’ve had in eight hours, it’s not raining: take the covers off and play! This is the best condition we’ve had, and nobody’s doing anything.” In the limited cricket that was played, Dan Lawrence struck a crucial half-century (50* off 66 balls), including a monstrous six over cover off Mohammad Ali’s bowling that Dinesh Karthik labelled the “shot of the series.” Lawrence took an aggressive approach against Pakistan’s struggling attack, while teammate Emilio Gay was trapped lbw by a low, unpredictable delivery from Mohammad Abbas. “Lawrence has found his rhythm,” Hussain analysed. “This isn’t a surface where you can just stand still: there’s a ball with your name on it, as Gay found out. You’ve got to score, put the bowlers under pressure.” Stuart Broad, another analyst, added: “Lawrence fought hard and played some spectacular shots. He took his time to get used to the pitch before unsettling the bowlers by moving around and using his feet.”

Dan Lawrence, England’s saviour

Recalled to the England team following Ben Stokes’ international retirement, Dan Lawrence has answered the call with a first-class average of 65.66 in the County Championship this season, including five centuries. His half-century at Lord’s follows a fifty in the first Test at Headingley. “I’m just looking to contribute in every Test and perform well,” he said. “Fortunately, so far, I think I’ve done that. Me and the other boys are hungry to make our mark in the England shirt, which I haven’t quite done in my career yet. It’s about taking every opportunity and enjoying these moments rather than stressing. Have fun and play the cricket that got me here this summer.”

With an attack consisting solely of pace bowlers (Jofra Archer, Ollie Robinson, Josh Tongue, Gus Atkinson), Lawrence also takes on the role of primary spin option. The 29-year-old added: “It’s about taking every chance and enjoying the moment rather than feeling nervous.”

A premature end that left a bitter taste

The decision to halt play mid-afternoon break left spectators frustrated, accustomed as they are to Lord’s’ unpredictable weather. The ground, known for its capricious conditions, once again played spoilsport despite conditions that had finally seemed to improve. Organisers have not explained the precise reasons for the early call-off, but footage and accounts confirm the sky had cleared just before the abandonment. “These fans have been waiting here all afternoon for the rain to stop,” Hussain remarked, visibly exasperated.

The fourth day of the second Test, which looks set to be decisive in the series, will begin at 11:15 (first ball at 12:00) on Sky Sports Cricket. For those without a subscription, no-commitment streaming options are available. England already lead the series after their comprehensive innings-and-103-run victory in the first Test at Headingley. The third and final match will take place at Edgbaston from 9 to 13 September.
