FIFA President Gianni Infantino and his administration are seeing their position weaken among member associations. On July 31, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced that it “supports the positions of UEFA and CONCACAF.” This statement follows the release of a controversial proposal: the transfer of rights and organization of FIFA’s flagship competitions to a new commercial entity, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE).

The AFC has taken a firm stance against the proposal. In a scathing statement, the Asian confederation stated that “the situation has reached a level where the real possibility of a World Cup boycott has been publicly raised.” This position reflects growing opposition within world football. The alliance between AFC, UEFA, and CONCACAF marks a turning point in resistance to FIFA’s proposed reforms. The AFC’s statement highlights that this reform jeopardizes the balance of world football. According to the confederation, transferring rights to FFE could have major consequences for competition organization and the governance of the sport. The AFC is therefore calling for collective reflection to preserve the integrity of the game. This united opposition among three major confederations could increase pressure on Gianni Infantino and his team to reconsider their project. For the first time, the AFC has raised the possibility of a World Cup boycott. If realized, such a move would have unprecedented repercussions on FIFA’s image and credibility. This declaration comes as tensions over the governance of international football continue to escalate. Member confederations of FIFA now appear determined to make their voices heard in defense of the sport’s traditional values.
