Video assistant referee Shaun Evans has denied deliberately making a hand gesture to convey a message, affiliation, conviction, or support of any kind. According to his statements, it was an involuntary and unconscious tremor, of which he was not even aware at the time.
This clarification follows the release of footage showing Evans making a hand movement toward the pitch during a recent match. The incident sparked questions among observers and supporters, with some interpreting it as a possible hidden communication or signal directed at players or the head referee. However, Evans insists that his gesture was purely physiological, ruling out any strategic or symbolic dimension. Football governing bodies will now have to decide how to proceed with this incident, especially as rules governing the use of VAR and referee interactions remain under close scrutiny. The credibility of decisions made behind the scenes could indeed be called into question if uncontrolled gestures were to be interpreted as coded signals.
