Liverpool's former manager, Arne Slot, has issued a new statement to clarify his current situation. The Dutchman secured Liverpool's 20th league title in his debut season, succeeding Jürgen Klopp, but his team struggled in defending the title, finishing fifth in the Premier League. The former Reds coach has recently been linked with the Netherlands national team manager role and has spoken about his next steps and the "incorrect speculations."

Slot was sacked at the end of the season on the banks of the Mersey after a difficult campaign marked by tensions with star striker Mohamed Salah and a trophy-less season despite a summer investment of over £400 million. The 47-year-old coach confirmed he had held talks with the Dutch football association, the KNVB, but revealed he had turned down the opportunity to take charge of the Netherlands national team following Ronald Koeman’s departure, with the role now likely going to Roberto Martínez.   “Over the past few weeks, and particularly in recent days, various reports have emerged regarding the vacant position at the helm of the Dutch national team, suggesting I had withdrawn from the process after lengthy negotiations, including on salary and contract length,” Slot told *Voetbal International*. “This speculation is incorrect. We simply never reached that stage of discussions.” The Dutchman added: “At this point in my career, I prefer to be on the training ground with my players every day. That’s simply not possible in the same way with a national team. I have enormous respect for the national team and the KNVB and can only speak positively about the professional manner in which the discussions took place this week. For now, I believe club football still has a lot to offer me.” He continued: “It would be a great honour to represent my country as national team manager one day. However, this was not the right time for me.” Slot’s success in his first season at Liverpool had made him a leading candidate for the Netherlands job after a promising spell in charge of a club back home. The Hardenberg native had made his mark by leading Feyenoord to Eredivisie glory and the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League final, lost to José Mourinho’s Roma. He leaves the Reds with a 58% win rate across 113 matches. Liverpool face Newcastle United when the league resumes. Roberto Martínez, currently in charge of the Dutch national team, has been named to succeed Koeman after Slot’s refusal. The latter had also stressed his attachment to club football, where he believes he can continue to make a contribution. While speculation over his future appeared to gather pace in recent days, Slot was keen to set the record straight, insisting negotiations never reached an advanced stage. His club career, marked by titles and standout performances, remains his priority for now. Young U21 talents to watch in the Premier League could thus benefit from his experience in the months ahead.
