Arsenal have received an opportunity to sign a player long targeted by the club: Jules Koundé. The Gunners, after several failed transfer attempts this summer, are attempting to finalize a squad capable of defending their Premier League title, a feat the club has not achieved in nearly a century.

The Catalan club, Barcelona, is now open to offers for its star players in order to raise funds. A golden opportunity for Arsenal, which could thus attract a player that Mikel Arteta has been eyeing for years. According to Spanish media outlet Sport, following Ronald Araujo's loan departure to Liverpool, Barcelona would also be willing to let Koundé go. Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has already covered the right-back position with World Cup winner Eric Garcia and young La Masia graduate Xavi Espart. The club is still looking to recruit a striker since the departure of Robert Lewandowski and says it is ready to consider any interesting offers for its rotation players.

Arsenal has been tracking Koundé for a long time. With William Saliba's injury, the Frenchman's international teammate, during the World Cup semi-final this summer, Arteta is evaluating his defensive options before the start of the new season. Cristhian Mosquera and Gabriel, paired at the heart of the defence during pre-season, reportedly failed to impress according to Sport, which notes that Arsenal will have to “convince a player that Hansi Flick no longer considers strategic.”

At the end of last season, Liverpool and Manchester City were also interested in Koundé. The 27-year-old defender, experienced and well-paid in Catalonia, would represent a significant investment. Arsenal is also considering Ezri Konsa, but Koundé could prove to be a more effective option. Aston Villa, Europa League winners, are however resisting the idea of letting another first-team player go to a Premier League rival. According to FourFourTwo, strikers remain the priority for the Gunners, with Arteta not inclined to recruit another defender unless an exceptional opportunity arises.

Recently, Arteta admitted that Jurrien Timber was still “several weeks away” from returning to the pitch. The Gunners may therefore be forced to recruit a centre-back or a right-back before the transfer window closes. Koundé, capable of playing in both positions, has been repositioned as a full-back since his arrival at Barcelona in 2022 from Sevilla. His profile, valued at €60 million by Transfermarkt, could match Arsenal’s needs as they seek defensive stability.

Arsenal kicks off its 2024-2025 season with a match against Coventry City on the opening day of the Premier League. The London club is banking on an active transfer window to strengthen a team that will have to prove its ability to retain its title, a mission the club has not accomplished in nearly a century.

Ronald Araujo’s departure, loaned to Liverpool, illustrates Barcelona’s financial difficulties. The Catalan club, in need of liquidity, is now open to transfers of its star players. This situation presents a rare opportunity for Arsenal, which could recruit a world-class defender without having to compete with wealthier clubs.

Hansi Flick, the German manager, has already strengthened his team at right-back, but the rest of the defence remains to be consolidated. Koundé, versatile and experienced, would represent an ideal solution for Arteta, who is looking to secure his defensive sector before the start of the new campaign.

Arsenal could also turn to Ezri Konsa, a centre-back from Aston Villa. However, the Birmingham club is firmly resisting the idea of selling a key player to a Premier League rival. Koundé, although more expensive, would offer a guarantee of quality and experience, two essential criteria for a club in search of titles.

The Gunners, who have already faced several disappointments this summer, are banking on this transfer to strengthen a defence weakened by injuries. With Timber still sidelined, Arteta has no choice but to find a quick solution to avoid another difficult season defensively.
