Arsenal set the tone for the defense of their English league title with a 3-0 victory over promoted side Coventry City on the opening day. Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka opened the scoring before Martin Ødegaard added a third to seal the Gunners' win at the Emirates Stadium.

A perfect start for the champions

As early as the 15th minute, Kai Havertz opened the scoring with a controlled strike, confirming his status as an undisputed starter in attack. Bukayo Saka doubled the lead before half-time, before Ødegaard completed Arsenal’s victory in the 49th minute. Despite limited opposition, the Gunners displayed impressive technical mastery, confirming their status as title favorites. Frank Lampard, Coventry’s manager, acknowledged the difficulty of the task against a far superior Arsenal side. “The gulf between the two teams was enormous,” he admitted. Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, was satisfied with a flawless start to the season, avoiding any embarrassment on the opening day.

A deep bench that impresses

Arsenal also showcased their new signing, Ezri Konsa, who joined for £55 million from Aston Villa. The team fielded an impressive bench with players like Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, and Martín Zubimendi, all coming off the bench. Viktor Gyökeres, despite being signed last summer as a first-choice striker, remained unused. “They are clearly the team to beat this season,” noted James Olley, a journalist at ESPN FC. The pecking order in attack now seems clear, with Havertz in pole position despite Gyökeres’ arrival. The Swede has now scored in four consecutive competitive matches, a career-best streak in England.

Tzolis shines on his debut

Christos Tzolis, signed for £34 million, made a strong impression in his first match with his new club. The Greek winger initiated the play leading to Havertz’s first goal before providing an assist for Saka. Despite rumors of signings for stars like Vinícius Júnior, Tzolis has established himself on the left flank. “He was very active and showed his potential,” Olley commented. Arsenal also allowed Leandro Trossard to leave for Beşiktaş, while Gabriel Martinelli was absent from the squad for this match. Pending potential reinforcements, Tzolis could well establish himself as a viable solution. Coventry, on the other hand, showed their limitations. Despite an ambitious summer recruitment (spending £140 million), the Sky Blues were largely dominated. Only Ellis Simms seemed up to the Premier League standard. Their next match against Hull could well be the first in a long series of struggles to avoid relegation. For Arsenal, the road to a new title already seems well underway. The Gunners will face Aston Villa next week to confirm their strong form. Southampton has also had a difficult start in the Championship, while Bayern Munich must deal with several absences ahead of their Super Cup clash.
