Real Madrid defender Raúl Asencio has been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol. A court spokesperson in Gran Canaria confirmed the player's conviction on Wednesday.
Asencio was stopped on August 16 at 6:30 AM at a roadside checkpoint in Gran Canaria while driving a Porsche Macan. The first breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol level of 0.90 mg/l, and the second 0.88 mg/l, which is four times the legal limit. The player admitted to the facts in a police report and was fined €14,400 (€120 per day for four months), along with an eight-month driving ban.
A player under medical supervision
Real Madrid, informed of the incident, declined to comment when approached by ESPN. An internal source confirmed that the club would impose a disciplinary sanction in accordance with its internal regulations. Asencio, 23, is currently recovering from a muscle injury to his right thigh, sustained on July 30. The club's official medical report indicates that his recovery is closely monitored, but sources suggest he should return to the squad in mid-September. Meanwhile, Asencio was charged in May by the Gran Canaria court for allegedly sharing explicit images of a woman and a minor without their consent. The charges against him relate solely to the dissemination of explicit videos, with the evidence indicating he was not involved in their recording.
A growing criminal record
This conviction for drunk driving adds to an already complex legal situation for the young defender. Real Madrid, a club accustomed to handling delicate situations, will now have to contend with this new sporting sanction in addition to potential criminal consequences. The club's management has not yet commented on the disciplinary measures being considered, but internal regulations typically impose penalties proportional to the severity of the offense. Asencio, whose career at Real Madrid is under close scrutiny, will now have to focus on his sporting rehabilitation after this period of enforced absence. His return to the pitch, scheduled for mid-September, may depend on the outcome of his internal disciplinary process.
