Cardiff City has completed the permanent transfer of Krystian Bielik, a central defender from West Bromwich Albion. The 28-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the Welsh club for an undisclosed fee.

A seasoned defender to bolster the squad

Bielik shared his thoughts on his arrival: “I’m really excited, I’m finally here and couldn’t be happier. I’m looking forward to getting started with the team as soon as possible and focusing on our first match.” He added: “I’ve played against Cardiff City several times before, and it’s never an easy task. But the atmosphere is always excellent, so it will be a pleasure to play here for this club.” The Polish defender, who can also play as a defensive midfielder, joined Arsenal in 2015 from Legia Warsaw. Prior to his stint at West Brom last summer, he played for Birmingham City, Walsall, Charlton Athletic, and Derby County.

A defense in desperate need of available players

Bielik’s arrival comes at a crucial time for Cardiff, who are severely short of available central defenders. Will Fish, Dylan Lawlor, Calum Chambers, and Gabriel Osho are all currently injured, though the latter is nearing a return. The Welsh club even handed a debut to 15-year-old Noah Anyadike in Tuesday’s 2-1 EFL Cup defeat to Norwich City, making him the youngest player ever to feature in the competition. Noah Anyadike, 15, becomes youngest-ever EFL Cup player. The new Cardiff signing could make his debut for the Bluebirds as early as Saturday, when they face Sheffield United at home under Chris Wilder at 3pm (UK time).

Another summer signing for the club

Bielik is the fourth senior player Cardiff have signed this summer. The club has also brought in goalkeeper Nathan Trott, midfielder Jack Moylan, and left-back Calum Scanlon, on loan from Liverpool. The latter has returned to the Welsh capital after a previous loan spell.
