London club Chelsea has reached an agreement with Atalanta for the transfer of Italian defender Honest Ahanor, aged 18. The transfer fee amounts to £40 million, with possible variable clauses. The player has obtained permission to travel to London for his medical examination and has already finalized the terms of his contract.

Chelsea's interest in the left-back dates back to last summer, when the club signed right-back Marco Palestra, also from Atalanta. Ahanor's representatives have indicated that he could be loaned out upon arrival at another Premier League club, though it remains unclear whether he will immediately join Xabi Alonso's squad. The young player, developed at Atalanta after a stint at Genoa, joined the Bergamo-based club last summer for €16 million, plus €4 million in potential bonuses.

A rapidly progressing profile

Honest Ahanor established himself as a regular starter in Serie A last season, making 28 appearances for Atalanta. He also made his Champions League debut in a 2-1 win over Club Bruges in September. Last May, he received his first call-up to the Italian national team for friendly matches against Luxembourg and Greece. His profile has particularly caught Chelsea's attention, as the club has already strengthened its squad under Xabi Alonso since his arrival at Stamford Bridge in July. The club notably signed England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a record £117 million, as well as experienced players Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson.

A promising start to the season for Chelsea

The Blues begin their Premier League campaign with a home match against Brighton this Sunday, following a 3-2 victory over Fulham on the opening day. The momentum appears favorable for the London club, which is relying on ambitious signings for this new season. Ahanor's transfer aligns with Chelsea's rebuilding strategy, as the club seeks to strengthen its defensive sector while investing in promising young talent. The club's ability to quickly integrate the player or loan him out could shape the course of his journey in London.
