Chelsea has surprised everyone by showing interest in Georginio Wijnaldum on the free transfer market. The Blues opened discussions with the former Dutch international, 35, after failing to recruit a successor to Enzo Fernández before the transfer window closed. Wijnaldum, a free agent since leaving Al-Ettifaq this summer, could still join England despite the Premier League transfer window being shut. Lamine Camara remains at Monaco after his last-minute transfer to Chelsea collapsed.

A proven profile to make up for the summer’s failures

The Blues were left frustrated on the final day of the transfer window. Fernández signed for Manchester City for £125 million, while their attempt to sign Camara fell through at the last hurdle. Faced with a void in midfield, Chelsea is now turning to the free transfer market to bolster their squad. According to reports from CaughtOffside, the London club’s hierarchy has already contacted Wijnaldum’s representatives to discuss a potential return to the Premier League. The former Liverpool and Newcastle midfielder, who has been without a club since leaving Al-Ettifaq, remains a highly experienced profile. He won the Premier League and the Champions League with Liverpool and has 96 caps for the Netherlands. Sports Mole notes that Wijnaldum is seen as a short-term solution, capable of adding depth and an extra offensive threat in a midfield sector where Chelsea desperately lacks leadership.

A risky gamble but with no heavy financial commitment

At first glance, signing a 35-year-old midfielder seems far removed from Chelsea’s recruitment philosophy. Yet this could be precisely what justifies such a move. The club already has a pool of young talent but desperately lacks experience, reliability, and leadership in midfield. Wijnaldum wouldn’t necessarily be a guaranteed starter, but he could provide invaluable cover, particularly in tough matches, while offering deep knowledge of English football. Financially, the risk would be minimal if both parties agree on a one-year deal. The bigger question, however, is his physical condition. At his age, expecting him to recapture his peak form from his Liverpool days would be unrealistic. But Chelsea don’t need that version of the player. They’re looking for an experienced figure who can contribute immediately and help bridge the gap until a younger midfielder arrives in the long term. Fernández, now plying his trade at City, even sent a message to his former club in response to his transfer to the Citizens—a further provocation in this chaotic transfer window as Chelsea attempts to rebuild after a string of failures.
