Manchester City announced on Wednesday the signing of Moroccan international Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille. The 18-year-old midfielder has signed a five-year contract with the Manchester club.

A record transfer for a teenager in the Premier League

Bouaddi becomes the most expensive player ever signed in the Premier League under the age of 19. The transfer fee amounts to €100 million, including €95 million paid immediately and an additional €5 million in potential bonuses. This surpasses the previous record held by Leny Yoro, who was transferred from Lille to Manchester United for €70 million in 2024. The Moroccan midfielder started five matches at the World Cup this summer, including the 1-1 draw against Brazil in the group stage. His arrival strengthens Manchester City’s midfield, which was left depleted after Rodri’s potential move to Barcelona at the start of the transfer window.

A dream come true for the young international

"Manchester City is, for me, the best club in the world," Bouaddi said upon his arrival. "It’s a dream to be here and to be able to say I’m a City player. I’ve spent most of my life working hard to become the best player possible and reach the top of football." The young player also spoke about his admiration for the club’s footballing philosophy: "I’ve followed City for many years, and I love their style of play. City always seeks to play high-quality football. And they’ve shown they’re winners. This club feels like it’s built to win."

An active transfer window despite sales

Despite this signing, City remains linked with a possible move for Enzo Fernández, Chelsea’s midfielder, to further strengthen its midfield. The Manchester club has had a busy end to the transfer window, including Savio’s departure to Tottenham and the expected arrival of Omar Marmoush in the English capital. Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca had even deployed defender Marc Guéhi in midfield during the opening Premier League match against Bournemouth. "I grew up watching Manchester City under Guardiola—what he accomplished upon arriving was simply incredible," Bouaddi added. "But we know City is one of the greatest clubs in the world, with the best players, the best team, and the best academy. Everything here is designed to perform and deliver the best." The young international concluded by highlighting the appeal of the Premier League: "I think the Premier League is the most attractive and competitive league in the world. The best league in the world. Every player dreams of playing in the Premier League, and I hope to do so very soon, as soon as possible."
