Croatia Bets on Footballers' Mental Health

On August 28, the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) unveiled a series of educational videos entirely dedicated to mental preparation and the psychological challenges faced by male and female footballers in training. This project is part of the UEFA HatTrick program, specifically under the "Social and Environmental Sustainability" pillar. Its ambition? To raise awareness about the importance of psychological conditioning in football while providing concrete advice to players, coaches, parents, and clubs.

A tool accessible to all football stakeholders

This groundbreaking initiative in Croatia aims to break taboos surrounding mental health in sports. The videos, produced under UEFA’s aegis, are aimed equally at young talents and seasoned professionals, technicians and families alike. The stated goal is twofold: first, to inform about the risks associated with stress, anxiety, or competitive pressures, and then to offer methods to address them on a daily basis. The content, available online, draws on testimonials and expert analyses to enhance its impact. The program is part of a broader European movement where mental health is gaining ground as a pillar of athletic performance. The HNS has chosen to rely on this short, educational format to reach a wide audience, from youth academies to the locker rooms of top-flight clubs.

A response to modern football challenges

With increasingly packed schedules and growing media exposure, football stakeholders are facing mounting external pressures. The HNS has identified this urgent need for psychological support, particularly among young players, who often find themselves alone in the face of high expectations. The videos, developed in collaboration with sports psychologists, tackle themes such as emotional management, resilience, and work-life balance. UEFA, through its HatTrick program, provides financial and logistical support for such projects, reflecting its commitment to a more human-centric football. For the HNS, this series marks a key milestone in its strategy for the sustainable development of Croatian football. It joins other European federations that have already integrated similar modules, such as the English FA or the German DFB. The challenge? To prepare today’s talents to become balanced athletes and individuals tomorrow.

A model for other federations to follow

While mental health becomes a central topic in high-level sports, Croatia is positioning itself as a pioneer in South-Eastern Europe. Feedback from the first screenings, particularly within training centres, is encouraging. Local clubs are now encouraged to integrate these resources into their own prevention programmes. The HNS has even announced an annual follow-up to assess the effectiveness of the videos and adjust the content based on identified needs. An initiative that could inspire other federations, such as the French Football Federation. For players, this series represents a breath of fresh air in an often demanding environment. As the HNS reminds us in its press release: “Football is not limited to physical performance. The mind matters as much as the legs.” A sentence that alone sums up the spirit of this ambitious project.
