The negotiations between Chelsea and Manchester City for the signing of Enzo Fernández reached their final stage on Monday evening, with direct discussions extending late into the night. The 25-year-old Argentine midfielder, coveted by the Citizens all summer, could therefore become Pep Guardiola’s new gem before the transfer window closes. A French journalist even suggested a possible decisive outcome in the coming hours.

A wave of optimism is sweeping through Fernández’s camp

The player’s close associates are now hinting that the transfer could well materialize, despite Chelsea’s lingering reservations. According to reports, Enzo Fernández himself is in favor of the move and has Manchester City in mind. Talks between the two clubs intensified after a key first step: City finally opened direct negotiations with Chelsea, despite the Blues’ August 14 deadline for bids. Liverpool had even considered alternatives, such as Manu Koné or Lamine Camara, to replace the Argentine midfielder. Chelsea, which still values Fernández at around £120 million, would only part ways with the player for a satisfactory fee and on the condition that they can sign a worthy replacement. But time is running out: the Blues cannot afford to lose one of their key players without bringing in a quality reinforcement before the transfer window shuts. For Manchester City, signing Enzo Fernández would be a major coup. With the departures of Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Nico González, and Tijjani Reijnders this summer, Enzo Maresca is desperately seeking a world-class midfielder, and the Argentine player fits the profile perfectly.

The timing, the final hurdle before a deal

If Enzo Fernández now appears open to a transfer and direct negotiations have begun, the main obstacle remains Chelsea's sporting logic. The Blues must absolutely find a high-level replacement before letting their star go, or risk weakening their midfield. The pressure is therefore at its peak for both clubs, especially as the hours tick by. According to observers, if Chelsea manages to quickly finalize the arrival of Manu Koné, Lamine Camara, or another targeted profile, the transfer could be completed in record time. However, if the Blues' recruitment plans stall, they may prefer to keep Fernández rather than accept a late, even exceptional, offer. On City's side, the stakes are just as high: strengthening a midfield already depleted by summer departures. If the deal goes through, Enzo Fernández would become the final piece of a team already in the midst of a rebuild. The question remains whether Chelsea can complete its own recruitment in time to give the green light. One thing is certain: Monday night looks set to be decisive for the future of the Argentine midfielder, whose name could soon echo through the stands of the Etihad.
