Málaga settled for a draw (1-1) against Deportivo in their first home match in LaLiga EA Sports, Sunday at La Rosaleda. Head coach Juan Francisco Funes admitted that “the point has a bitter taste,” while stressing the importance of “earning points.”

“The point has a bitter taste, even though we managed to respond after the goal, finish the first half positively and show character,” Funes analyzed during the post-match press conference. He also acknowledged that his team lacked “bite, verticality and aggression.” “Today we did many things well, enough to win, but earning points remains important,” he added, while praising the “spectacular atmosphere” at the stadium and Málaga’s “impressive lineup.”

A team under construction

Funes believes that “as the matches go by and the players gain confidence, everyone will be sharper, both our opponents and us.” With this momentum, “results will come sooner than we think,” he assured. He emphasized the need to “progress while staying true to our identity,” while mentioning the final days of the transfer window. “Until the last day, we will try to have a complete squad, with all the necessary elements to reach our goal,” he stated.

Ambitious despite the season’s start

Málaga, which opened their LaLiga EA Sports campaign with a draw, is banking on rapid improvement. Funes reiterated that the team must “grow from its identity” and rely on a solid foundation for upcoming matches. He also highlighted the importance of the home atmosphere, underscoring the enthusiasm of Málaga supporters. The coach concluded by stressing the need to “stay alert” and continue working to enhance collective performance. Despite a somewhat lackluster start to the season, the club is counting on a gradual rise in form to meet its objectives.
