Leon Goretzka, former Bayern Munich midfielder, has officially signed with Aston Villa as a free agent. The 31-year-old German midfielder left the Bavarian club this summer after eight seasons.

“I took a bit of extended vacation, then I had to reflect on what I really wanted. From the very first moment, I had a great feeling, and I’m really happy to be here,” Goretzka said upon his arrival. “From the first conversation with the manager, I had a good impression. Aston Villa is a very big club.” The player also shared his ambitions: “I want to help the team achieve its goals and bring the experience I’ve gained throughout my career. I’m really looking forward to playing in these big matches every two or three days, which is probably different from the Bundesliga, where there are only a few big games against top opponents.”

A seasoned midfielder to strengthen Aston Villa

Aston Villa completed this transfer to bolster their midfield, especially with Amadou Onana sidelined until next year due to a knee injury sustained with Belgium at the World Cup. The Villans suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Brighton in their opening Premier League match last Sunday. Goretzka made 312 appearances for Bayern Munich, scoring 51 goals during his time in the Bundesliga. He also has 73 caps for the German national team and featured in three matches at this summer’s World Cup. With the Bavarian club, he won seven German league titles and the Champions League in 2020. Aston Villa have also lost several key players this summer, including defender Ezri Konsa, who joined Arsenal for £51 million, and striker Morgan Rogers, sold to Chelsea for £117 million. Central midfielder Youri Tielemans moved to Manchester United in July, while left-back Lucas Digne returned to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month. Manager Unai Emery also failed to retain English striker Ollie Watkins, who was pursued by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

A career marked by ups and downs in Munich

Leon Goretzka was once considered one of the best German midfielders of his generation, capable of playing in any midfield position. Peter Neururer, his coach at Bochum, had described him at the age of 18 as an "exceptional talent, which only appears once in a century." However, his athleticism gradually declined over the years, allowing younger players to take his place. Last season, Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany mainly used him as a substitute, just as Julian Nagelsmann did with the German national team during the 2026 World Cup. Goretzka thus played only three matches for the Mannschaft, totaling just 96 minutes. Despite his seven German championship titles and his Champions League victory, Goretzka did not secure a move to a major club this summer, despite being a free agent. He had notably been in concrete talks with AC Milan, but those discussions did not come to fruition. His arrival at Aston Villa, a club less prestigious than his previous employers, could give him a new chance to revive his career. "I am at a turning point," he admitted, emphasizing that his past experience had allowed him to accumulate titles, but his future with the national team under Jürgen Klopp remains uncertain. ### A risky bet for Aston Villa The Birmingham club is banking on Goretzka’s experience to compensate for the departures of key players. However, his adaptation to the relentless pace of the Premier League could prove challenging, especially against more athletic midfielders like Johan Manzambi, the Swiss prodigy signed by Aston Villa this summer. The 20-year-old Swiss player is regarded as one of the best young talents in the Bundesliga and could quickly establish himself. Goretzka, whose speed was sometimes criticized during the World Cup, may struggle to keep up with the tempo set by the English competition. For the club, this is therefore a gamble on experience and leadership, but his real impact on the pitch remains to be seen in the coming months.
