Inter Miami has officially announced the appointment of Cristian "Kily" González as head coach, replacing Guillermo Hoyos. The club made the announcement on Thursday as the team has gone five matches without a win in MLS and Leagues Cup, with four losses and one draw. "González will officially take up his duties upon obtaining his work permit. Guillermo Hoyos will continue to lead the team on an interim basis until the arrival of the new staff," the club's statement said.

An experienced profile to revive a struggling team

The 53-year-old Argentine arrives with a solid coaching record in Argentina, where he has managed Rosario Central, Unión (Santa Fe), and Platense. He also played for Rosario Central before embarking on a European adventure in 1996 with Valencia in La Liga, Real Zaragoza, and Inter Milan in Serie A. His international career saw him play alongside Lionel Messi for the Argentina national team in 2005, with whom he even played two World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Uruguay. Inter Miami, currently second in the Eastern Conference with 39 points after 21 matches, is banking on his experience to end its poor run. González succeeds Hoyos, who took over the team in April following the departure of Javier Mascherano. The interim period began impressively with a record of six wins, one draw, and one loss, scoring 26 goals in eight matches—the best start for a coach in the franchise's history since joining MLS in 2020.

Hoyos leaves MLS with honors

"Inter Miami would like to particularly thank Guillermo Hoyos for his commitment and total dedication to the club. His role, which began in April, was marked by a determination to lead the team until the arrival of the new coach," the official statement reads. The Argentine is thus leaving the club after a season and a half marked by mixed results but with a positive momentum at the start. Parallel to this appointment, Inter Miami has accelerated discussions with Palmeiras over a potential transfer for Riquelme Fillipi, a 19-year-old offensive midfielder. According to ESPN Brasil, the two clubs are close to an agreement for a deal involving 60% of the player's rights, in exchange for a fee between $5.5 and $6 million. While the team struggles to string together victories, the management is banking on targeted recruitments to bolster the squad. The Fillipi dossier joins other avenues being explored by the club in hopes of reviving a season that is shaping up to be challenging. González, meanwhile, will need to quickly prove his managerial mettle to prevent the franchise from sinking into an even deeper sporting crisis. The new coach’s mission will be to restore confidence in a group adrift, while relying on players like Lionel Messi, the team’s iconic captain. His international experience and knowledge of South American football could prove decisive during this pivotal period.
