Liverpool: Adam Wharton transfer officially cancelled

Liverpool's pursuit of Adam Wharton has been abruptly halted. The Reds had been hoping for a major signing this summer after spending over £400 million last summer. Among the players still under consideration were Bradley Barcola and Yankuba Minteh. Liverpool's new manager, Andoni Iraola, had assured that reinforcements would arrive at Anfield. However, the Basque will not be able to sign the Crystal Palace midfielder.

So far, only Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet have joined Liverpool on a permanent basis. In an interview with former Reds legend Jamie Carragher for Sky Sports, Iraola confirmed: “We will definitely sign players.” He added: “Some deals need to wait until the end. In the end, the image that matters is the one we have on September 1, because we are still very fragile.” Liverpool has just parted ways with academy product Curtis Jones. According to an exclusive report by CaughtOffside, the Reds were targeting an “ambitious transfer” for Wharton, the England international midfielder, to replace his compatriot. However, Crystal Palace’s new manager, Pierre Sage, has dashed the Merseysiders’ hopes. In remarks relayed by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano on X (formerly Twitter), Sage stated: “It’s not the right time” for Wharton to leave Selhurst Park.

A midfielder with a bright future ahead

Adam Wharton joined Crystal Palace in January 2024 from Blackburn Rovers. The 22-year-old has established himself as a regular starter in the Championship after progressing through the youth ranks at his former club. His career has been highlighted by a call-up to the England national team and four international caps. Many pundits regard him as one of the most promising midfielders of his generation for the next decade. This summer, Wharton was courted by Liverpool and both Manchester clubs. He made a name for himself in last season’s Conference League final, where he was named man of the match. According to FourFourTwo, Crystal Palace consider Wharton “almost unsellable” this summer. The midfielder is expected to reach a valuation of €100 million when he eventually leaves London. Currently, he is valued at €70 million according to Transfermarkt.

Liverpool’s transfer window is closing

The Liverpool club is banking on new signings to strengthen its squad ahead of the Premier League restart this weekend against Newcastle United. Despite Iraola’s statements about the arrival of new players, the Wharton deal is off the table. Crystal Palace, who need their midfielder for another season, are refusing to part with their gem. Sage has justified his stance by highlighting that an additional year in a new sporting project would be beneficial for Wharton.

Liverpool’s management will now have to look elsewhere to bolster their midfield. The club remains under pressure to improve its squad after a disappointing 2023-2024 season. Fans hope that any upcoming transfers, if they materialize, will help the team regain its top-level performance.
