Manchester United were pushed to sign a new left-back to replace Luke Shaw after his defensive error gifted an early goal to Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.

BBC Sport chief journalist Simon Stone, on site, highlighted the growing trend: Manchester United must absolutely acquire a top-class left-back. "The debate over the need for a new left-back at Manchester United can only go one way after this performance," he said. Luke Shaw struggles to contain Abdul Fatawu, with the Manchester full-back unable to keep up with the Ghanaian's pace. The error occurred on the right flank, where Abdul Fatawu first deceived Shaw with a masterful first touch before easily outpacing him. The Manchester full-back, unable to make up the ground, then saw Fatawu cross to the left side of the penalty area, where Leif Davis finished with a perfect half-volley into the top corner. Ipswich Town's goal, scored in the 12th minute, sealed their eventual victory (3-0).

Shaw still hampered by past injuries

Luke Shaw's physical shortcomings against Abdul Fatawu have reignited persistent concerns about his recovery and consistency. Since suffering a serious double leg fracture early in his career at Manchester United, the 31-year-old full-back has been plagued by recurring fitness issues and muscle injuries. His lack of explosive pace and recovery was cruelly exposed during Ipswich's first goal. Unable to hold his position against direct and explosive wingers, Shaw has become a focal point for criticism from pundits and supporters alike. The latter are now urging the Manchester hierarchy to act without delay to strengthen this position before the transfer window closes.

Manchester United searching for a high-level left-back

Manchester United's technical staff have already scouted several profiles to address this need, with Newcastle's Lewis Hall identified as a top priority target this summer. However, the Magpies have firmly refused to part with their player without a substantial financial offer, forcing the Red Devils to look at other options. Tottenham's Djed Spence was reportedly proposed to Manchester United and Liverpool before his definitive move to Inter Milan. Other names are now circulating, such as David Raum, Alejandro Balde, and Raphael Guerreiro, all mentioned in Manchester's discussions. The club must make a swift decision before the transfer window closes.
