Mangas: At Sporting, we always bounce back

Sporting Clube de Portugal is no longer among the title favorites in the Liga Betclic. Yet, Rui Patrício, their manager, fully embraces his mission. Mangas, as he is nicknamed, reiterated yesterday that winning is not the sole objective of his team. “We don’t always lift trophies, but we always get back up,” he stated during a press conference.

This declaration follows a string of disappointing results, which have reignited questions about the club’s ability to compete with FC Porto or SL Benfica. Mangas sought to clarify: “Criticism is part of the game. Our priority remains cohesion and collective progress.” The Portuguese coach, in charge for two seasons, is focusing on a gradual rebuild, far removed from immediate title expectations. Sporting, accustomed to playing a leading role, is currently going through a more challenging period. Fans, often demanding, expect performances that match the club’s budget and history. Yet Mangas appears determined to press on despite the doubts. “We are building something lasting,” he added. “The trophies will come in time.” This philosophy aligns with a broader strategy where youth development takes center stage. The club is banking on its academy to shape the future rather than splurging on expensive signings. A strategy that appeals to some observers but also raises questions about the ability to quickly challenge the league’s top teams. Recent results show the road ahead will be long, but Mangas doesn’t seem in a hurry.
