Brazilian international Vinicius Junior, a pillar of Real Madrid and one of its major stars, is out of contract at the Bernabéu. His negotiations for a new deal are not progressing, which has reignited speculation about his future. Several media outlets, including The Athletic, have mentioned Arsenal's interest in the player, though these rumors remain very much in their infancy.

Paul Merson, Arsenal legend, has warned his former club: in his view, Vinicius Junior is playing a double game. “Vinicius Jr is simply trying to secure a new contract at Real Madrid. He’s playing Arsenal,” he wrote in his Sky Sports column. For the former player, this situation highlights Arsenal’s current position in the transfer market. “Arsenal are targeting a player from Real Madrid, one of the best. It shows where they are in the market. It’s a real cause for concern for other Premier League clubs, in my opinion.” Merson also points to the urgency for Arsenal to find a replacement for Leandro Trossard, who left this summer. The club has already signed Christos Tzolis from Club Bruges, but the Greek is not yet an established star. His adaptation to English football remains unproven, despite his strong performances in Belgium. For the former Gunner, Trossard’s departure was a strategic error. “Letting him go for nothing is a bad deal. I can’t believe half the Premier League wasn’t interested in him. He played in all the big games for Arsenal last season, and he’s a top footballer.” Merson strongly advises Arsenal to target Bradley Barcola if their pursuit of Vinicius Junior fails. “If Arsenal don’t sign either of them, that’s a real problem. They’re very short in that position now, especially since Trossard left.” He stresses the need for a high-profile profile to fill the gap. Vinicius Junior’s situation at Real Madrid is creating tension between the player’s ambitions and the club’s expectations. The Brazilian, out of contract, is likely using his supposed interest from Arsenal as leverage in his negotiations with the Madrid club. Meanwhile, Arsenal is banking on an ambitious transfer to strengthen its squad, but the process already seems complicated. The London club’s executives must now make a strategic choice to avoid being left without a solution on the left. Merson concludes by stressing the importance of not underestimating the impact of a departure like Trossard’s. “For what you’re selling, letting him go for nothing isn’t a good deal.” An analysis that could weigh on the club’s future decisions.
