The NBA has just adopted new rules to limit the tanking strategy. During the league's board of governors meeting, owners approved major changes to the draft lottery. From now on, teams finishing at the bottom of the standings will be less advantaged than in the past. This decision aims to make intentionally losing at the end of the season less appealing.
The new provisions include reducing the chances of drawing a very high pick for the worst-ranked teams. For example, the probability of winning the first overall pick in the draft will be lower for a last-place team. The goal is clear: encourage franchises to give their best effort until the end, even during difficult seasons. The NBA hopes this will improve the overall competitiveness of its games. These changes are part of a broader effort to enhance sporting fairness. The league has already implemented similar measures in other major competitions, such as
football, where some teams have been criticized for their game-time management. In 2024, the NBA had already adjusted the lottery system to reduce the advantages for struggling teams. This time, owners have chosen to go further. The exact details of the new rules will be officially announced in the coming days. The NBA states that these adjustments will take effect starting with the next draft. Clubs will therefore need to adapt their strategies to avoid penalties. Some observers are already questioning the real impact of these measures, particularly for rebuilding franchises.
Other competitions, such as the Premier League, may draw inspiration from this approach to combat similar practices. This decision comes as the NBA seeks to maintain fan interest in competitive games until the end of the regular season. By limiting the benefits of tanking, the league hopes to offer a more balanced and attractive spectacle. Fans will be able to follow teams in competition until the very last day, without fearing that some franchises might sabotage their performance.
