Newcastle United and Aston Villa are keen to battle for the services of Cameroon international Christian Kofane, 20, during the winter transfer window. The young striker, who plays for Bayer Leverkusen, had already caught the attention of several Premier League clubs before the summer transfer window closed, but ultimately remained in Germany. The Magpies and the Villans now have several months to assess his potential before making a potential offer in January.

A highly sought-after profile

According to Football Insider, the two English clubs will closely monitor Kofane’s performances, a player described as having “huge potential.” In the 2025-2026 season, he scored seven goals and provided six assists across all competitions. His start to the 2026-2027 season is equally promising, having already scored twice in his first two appearances for Leverkusen. Newcastle, which has rebuilt its squad by focusing on young talent, could find in Kofane an ideal reinforcement to replace Nick Woltemade. Matthias Jaissle, Newcastle’s manager, now has a team increasingly geared toward the future. At Aston Villa, the club has also undergone significant renewal, particularly after the departure of Ollie Watkins, and could see Kofane as a natural complement to its new attack.

A tight race and a high price

The battle between the two English clubs is expected to be fierce. The Guardian notes that Newcastle signed Matias Fernandez-Pardo this summer, while Aston Villa bolstered its offensive sector with Ibrahim Mbaye and Nicolas Jackson. However, the main obstacle remains the price demanded by Leverkusen. The German club has no reason to part ways with a young Cameroon international in top form, especially if his performances continue to impress in the coming months. Everton has also joined the race to sign the striker, valued at £51 million following his 16 goals and assists last season. Kofane, already a standout performer in the Bundesliga, represents a versatile profile: capable of making an immediate impact while also having long-term potential. Both English clubs will need to convince Leverkusen to let him go in January, in a context where the Cameroon international could become one of the most closely watched transfers of the winter.
