Paris Saint-Germain finally receives the LFP's decision regarding the second leg against Stade Rennais. After the first Ligue 1 matchday, originally scheduled at Parc des Princes but postponed due to an unplayable pitch, the match was eventually played at Roazhon Park and ended in a 2-2 draw. Ferran Torres had scored a brace for Rennes that day. However, the Breton club had been vociferously demanding that the second leg take place in Rennes. The Competitions Committee has now ruled the opposite.
A €150,000 fine imposed on PSG
In a statement released this Friday, the LFP made its decision official. The match for the 23rd Ligue 1 matchday between PSG and Rennes will indeed be held at Parc des Princes. This news puts an end to the controversy over the venue of the match. However, the Parisian club does not escape without consequences: it has been fined €150,000 for an unplayable pitch, in accordance with Article 501.4 of the LFP Competitions Regulations. “Regarding the match for the 1st Ligue 1 McDonald’s Paris Saint-Germain – Stade Rennais matchday, which was reversed on August 19, the Competitions Committee has decided to impose a €150,000 fine on Paris Saint-Germain in application of Article 501.4 of the LFP Competitions Regulations, which pertains to clubs' obligations regarding pitch and alternative stadium playability. Regarding the match for the 23rd Ligue 1 McDonald’s Stade Rennais – Paris Saint-Germain matchday, the match is reversed and will be held at Parc des Princes,” details the statement. This decision comes after weeks of tension between the two clubs. Rennes, which had hoped to host the second leg, thus sees its wish granted… but in reverse. Parc des Princes will therefore host the rematch, while PSG will have to swallow this hefty fine. A sanction that underscores the importance of the safety and playability standards imposed by the LFP, especially for a club of Paris Saint-Germain’s stature.
Rennes and Paris meet again on matchday 23
The calendar is now set: Stade Rennais and Paris Saint-Germain will face off at the Parc des Princes for Matchday 23 of Ligue 1. This clash promises high tension, especially as both teams will be eager to take their revenge. For Rennes, it’s a chance to confirm their strong current form, while PSG will look to reignite their title race.
Ferran Torres, already the scorer of a brace against PSG, could once again play the spoiler. The LFP has ruled in favor of the Parc des Princes, despite Breton requests. This decision puts an end to a controversy that had lasted for several weeks. Now, all that remains is to see if PSG can rise to the occasion in their own backyard, despite the fine hanging over them. One thing is certain: the rematch is set to be electric.
