Raheem Sterling, former England international, is set to appear in court at Basingstoke Magistrates' Court on September 15, facing three charges: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide with intent to supply for inhalation, and failing to provide a sample. The charges stem from an incident on May 28, 2026, on the M3 motorway in Hampshire, where the player crashed his Lamborghini into barriers.
A single-vehicle incident
According to authorities, the May 28 incident involved only Sterling’s Lamborghini, traveling southbound on the M3 near the Minley interchange. No other vehicles were involved, and no injuries were reported. Sterling, 31, from Berkshire, was arrested before being released on bail pending further investigation. Police initially suspected the player of driving under the influence of drugs, but this charge was not included in the final accusations. In May, a source close to Sterling told
BBC Sport that no evidence of drugs in his system had been found.
A career marked by highs and lows
Sterling, who earned 82 caps for England between 2012 and 2022, had a distinguished international career, featuring in three World Cups and two European Championships. At club level, he won four Premier League titles, five League Cups, and an FA Cup with Manchester City between 2015 and 2022. Chelsea signed him for £47.5 million in 2022 before loaning him to Arsenal in 2024. Upon his return to Chelsea in 2025, he was excluded from the first team and forced to train separately. Since the end of his contract with Feyenoord Rotterdam—where he played briefly earlier this year—Sterling has been without a club. He joined the Dutch side in February on a short-term deal after mutually agreeing to leave Chelsea. He made eight appearances for Feyenoord before departing. The allegations against him come at a difficult personal time, according to a source close to the player. The source told
BBC Sport that Sterling had been through "two extremely difficult years," feeling "worthless" and "forgotten."
