Tottenham is currently in discussions with AS Monaco regarding a potential one-season loan deal for Pape Matar Sarr, according to Fabrizio Romano. The journalist stated on X that Monaco has approached the player’s camp to discuss a possible loan transfer. The talks have focused on the sporting project and the compensation for the Senegalese midfielder.

This news comes as Sarr has yet to meet the expectations set for him since his arrival at Tottenham. The London club, which has already signed Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes this summer, now appears open to the idea of letting him leave. This situation could be confirmed before the next match against Newcastle, where the player is unlikely to be included in the squad.

A loan to reignite his career

A loan move for Sarr to Monaco could give him more playing time and help convince Roberto De Zerbi of his value to Tottenham’s squad upon his return. The North London club is banking on players like Tonali, Fernandes, and Savio—recruited this summer—to strengthen its midfield. The 23-year-old Senegalese player no longer seems to be part of the team’s long-term plans. While this exit would only be a loan, Tottenham could attempt to include a purchase option or obligation in the deal. A strategy that would allow the club to recover part of the funds invested in its new players, especially as summer spending approaches £300 million. Tottenham forced to sell after record spending Sarr’s departure fits into a broader squad reduction strategy following massive recruitment. Cristian Romero and Luka Vuskovic have already left the club this summer, and further sales could follow to balance the accounts. The Senegalese midfielder, whose market value may have declined due to his performances, could be sold to mitigate the financial impact of these transfers. This situation mirrors the challenges faced by major English clubs, which are often forced to sell after significant spending during transfer windows. Tottenham, which has also completed the signing of Savio from Manchester City and is set to finalize the arrival of Omar Marmoush, will now have to manage this financial equation.
