Tottenham must sign Osimhen this summer despite the financial risk

Tottenham Hotspur has already spent lavishly this summer, but more expenditure is required if Spurs are to return to the top of the Premier League table. And Victor Osimhen must be at the top of their priority list. It is clear that Tottenham are desperately short of striking power after Richarlison’s poor performance on the opening day against Brentford and the recurring injury problems of Dominic Solanke, which make him an unreliable option. Arsenal, for its part, secured a victory in its opening match.

A transfer worth over €100 million

Victor Osimhen embodies the image of a goal scorer, a quality that has been lacking at Tottenham in recent seasons. Yet his arrival would come at a hefty price. According to ESPN, the Nigerian, currently contracted to Galatasaray, was signed for around €65 million in the summer of 2025, including an initial transfer fee of €35 million and an additional €30 million in deferred payments. His weekly salary would reach €310,000, according to Capology, a figure well above the €200,000 and €250,000 earned respectively by Sandro Tonali and Omar Marmoush at Tottenham. To sign Osimhen, Spurs would have to overhaul their wage structure and spend at least €100 million on the 27-year-old. Yet, thanks to the flexibility of Financial Fair Play and the exceptional revenues generated by the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the club has some financial leeway. Tottenham has already spent €320 million this summer, but the allowable spending ceiling is €480 million, or 85% of total revenue. The sales of players such as Richarlison or Pape Sarr could free up additional funds.

Osimhen must prove his worth in the Premier League

After discreet appearances in Charleroi and Lille, Osimhen exploded at Napoli, where he formed a devastating duo with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to deliver the Serie A title to the Partenopei in 2023. That season, he scored 26 league goals and five in the Champions League. Yet a move to the Premier League, notably to Chelsea, never materialized due to his salary demands. A Saudi offer also fell through at the last minute, leaving him without a club eligible in Europe before he joined Galatasaray. Two years later, his record remains mixed. Despite winning a league title in Turkey and delivering consistent performances, Osimhen has never confirmed his status as a global star in England. For many, he must now prove his worth on British soil to be recognized as one of the best strikers of his generation.

A profile tailor-made for De Zerbi’s style

With Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham have rediscovered a more offensive and spectacular style of play, even if the opening defeat to Brentford highlighted the club’s ongoing challenges. Spurs’ system, built on quick transitions and crosses, is a perfect fit for Osimhen, a specialist in finishing inside the box. Deliveries from Pedro Porro, Destiny Udogie, Mohammed Kudus or Savio would create ideal chances for a forward as effective in the air as he is with ground control. Unlike Richarlison, who often merely finishes moves, or Solanke, who relies on others to create space, Osimhen generates opportunities through his pace, strength and footballing intelligence. His arrival would transform a promising attack into a fearsome machine. Tottenham have already strengthened their squad, but Osimhen could make them serious contenders in the race with Arsenal and the rest of the Big Six.
