Tottenham targeting Koundé to counter Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur is preparing a move that could have major repercussions for Arsenal. The north London rivals are no strangers to battles to attract the same players, as evidenced by their recent competition for Sandro Tonali, initially targeted by Arsenal before his arrival at Tottenham this summer. With numerous deals still to be finalized this summer, the two clubs could once again find themselves competing, particularly over one player: Jules Koundé.

According to Spanish media outlet Fichajes, Tottenham is considering a transfer for Jules Koundé, a defender from Barcelona, for an estimated fee of around €65 million. With Cristian Romero’s departure already confirmed, Spurs have signed Jan Paul van Hecke as his replacement. However, the club is looking to further strengthen its defense before the transfer window closes, with the French player being seen as “very interested in his versatility,” capable of playing on both the right and in the center of defense. This potential signing would be a major coup, as Koundé has been a priority target for Arsenal for several seasons. The Gunners, too, are seeking to bolster their defensive ranks, particularly due to uncertainties surrounding William Saliba’s availability following a back injury sustained at the World Cup. Recent physical issues involving Jurrien Timber and Ben White have made a defensive reinforcement necessary, especially on the right side. While Tottenham has yet to submit an official offer, the London club’s interest will depend on Barcelona’s willingness to part ways with Koundé. The Catalans, who are expected to sign an attacker before the transfer window closes, may accept an offer exceeding €60 million for the French defender. On Arsenal’s side, financial constraints could limit their interest in Koundé, with the Gunners currently prioritizing the signings of Bruno Guimarães and Vinícius Jr. However, with Tottenham determined to strengthen its defense, a new right-back could well arrive before the window slams shut. Pedro Porro, for his part, has established himself as one of the best in his position at the World Cup, and Roberto De Zerbi would find it difficult to consider replacing him in his system. According to Transfermarkt, Koundé is valued at €60 million. Spurs will open their Premier League season with an away trip to Brentford.
