FootballWyndham Clark secured victory at the BMW Championship despite Rory McIlroy's strong challenge.
Antoine Seville · 24 août 2026 · 4 min de lectureWyndham Clark retained his top spot on the final day of the BMW Championship, Sunday, August 24, 2026, at Bellerive Country Club, to claim his third victory of the season. The U.S. Open champion had to fight hard against a resurgent Rory McIlroy, who closed the gap before faltering in the final holes. Clark finished at 17 under par, ahead of McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay.
A turbulent start for Clark
Wyndham Clark, who held a comfortable lead after Saturday, saw his advantage slip from the very first hole. He bogeyed after a three-putt from 65 feet, while McIlroy drained a 10-foot birdie. The Northern Irishman’s opening round was promising, but he failed to save par at the fourth hole. Clark then compounded his struggles with another bogey at the sixth hole after a missed chip, allowing Gary Woodland—two groups ahead—to close within two strokes. McIlroy further tightened the race with a birdie at the eighth hole, then drew level with Clark at the 11th after another birdie. Clark, who struggled to convert his birdie chances on Sunday, finally reclaimed the lead with a 15-foot putt at the 16th hole. McIlroy, trapped in a bunker and then another before bogeying at the 17th, saw his hopes of victory vanish. Clark added another birdie at the next hole to extend his lead, while Cantlay—who carded a double bogey at the 11th—limited the damage with three consecutive birdies to finish second at -14.
McIlroy and Cantlay hold strong but fall short
Rory McIlroy, who had cut a five-stroke deficit to Clark by midday, ultimately finished third, four strokes behind the champion. He admitted his game wasn’t yet at the desired level but praised his resilience in staying in contention. *“I’m not satisfied with my swing or performance today, but it’s reassuring to know that even when I’m not at my best, I can still fight for a win,”* he said. Patrick Cantlay, runner-up, highlighted his progress after a tough 2025 season. *“Three wins this season—that’s my best year yet, and I’m thrilled with how I feel today,”* he said. Gary Woodland, Collin Morikawa, and Chris Gotterup finished tied for fourth at -12, while Robert MacIntyre stood out with a -5 score in the final round, securing his place in the top 30. Morikawa, who produced a spectacular eagle at the 17th hole, ultimately bogeyed the last to finish at -12.
