The Netherlands national team's new coach, Xavi Hernandez, revealed on Tuesday that he was not affected by having been the third choice for the position. He was officially presented at a press conference the same day.
When asked about his career path before taking on this role, Xavi Hernandez downplayed the importance of the order in which he had been considered for the job. "It doesn't matter that I was the third choice; what matters is that I'm here today," he said. His appointment marks a new milestone in his career, following his departure from FC Barcelona in November 2024.
A surprising appointment nonetheless
Xavi Hernandez's appointment as head coach of the Oranje comes after months of speculation and rumors surrounding the vacant position. The Dutch football association's first two choices,
Thomas Tuchel and Arne Slot, had ultimately declined the offer, paving the way for the former Barcelona midfielder. He now has the mission of qualifying the Netherlands for the 2026 World Cup. Xavi Hernandez, who also discussed his experience at FC Barcelona, emphasized his desire to pass on his passion for football to the Dutch players. "I want to bring my know-how and experience to help the team progress," he added.
An immediate challenge for the Spanish coach
From the start of his tenure, Xavi Hernandez will have to contend with a packed schedule, including World Cup qualifying matches. His main objective will be to qualify the Netherlands for the 2026 World Cup, a competition the Oranje have not participated in since 2014. "I am aware of the stakes and the responsibility that comes with this role," he acknowledged. Furthermore, Xavi Hernandez mentioned the possibility of calling up certain players based abroad, such as
Jules Koundé, to strengthen the team. He also stressed the importance of collective cohesion in the success of a sporting project.
