Tottenham Hotspur have reached a verbal agreement for defender Djed Spence to leave the club, with the 25-year-old set to join Italian champions Inter Milan. The transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the deal on social media platform X, stating that both clubs have agreed on a transfer fee of €31.5 million (£27 million). Personal terms with Spence have also been finalized, as the England international pushed for the move to pursue a new challenge in Serie A.

Romano shared the news on X, writing: « Djed Spence to Inter, here we go! Verbal agreement in place now with Tottenham for England RWB. Transfer fee worth €31.5m. Full agreement also with Spence who wanted the move as revealed over recent days. Deal in place. » The post included a link to a screenshot of his announcement. His versatility, capable of playing as both a right-back and left-back, made him a sought-after target.

Why Spence sought a move away from Tottenham

Spence’s decision to leave North London stems from his desire for regular first-team football. Despite earning international minutes with England, he faced an uncertain starting role under Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi. The defender had previously enjoyed a successful loan spell in Italy with Genoa and was keen to return to Serie A full-time for a fresh challenge at the highest level of European football.

The transfer will provide Tottenham with significant funds to support their ongoing squad restructuring. For Spence, the move offers the primary starting role he has been seeking in a top European league. The deal also marks a substantial business transaction for Tottenham, who had been linked with Spence’s potential departure all summer.

Tottenham’s active summer transfer window

Tottenham remain one of the busiest clubs in this summer’s transfer market. The club has already strengthened their squad with several signings, including Martin Dubravka on a free transfer from Burnley, Andy Robertson, and Marcos Senesi. They also extended Micky van de Ven’s contract and signed his compatriot Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52 million.

Tottenham broke their club transfer record twice in a few days with the signings of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali. The club is expected to complete one more major signing, with Savinho set to join De Zerbi’s attack. In terms of outgoings, Tottenham sold defender Luka Vuskovic to Brighton for a fee close to what they paid for van Hecke. They also offloaded centre-forwards Will Lankshear and Alejo Veliz to Middlesbrough and EC Bahia respectively, while winger Manor Solomon joined West Ham.

Tottenham’s summer activity reflects their ambition to build a competitive squad under De Zerbi, though the future of defender Cristian Romero remains unresolved. The club’s transfer business continues to shape their squad for the upcoming season.
