FootballAston Villa turns to Ibrahim Mbaye and buries Leao
Sophie Bartega · 29 août 2026 · 3 min de lectureAston Villa have reached an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain over the transfer of Ibrahim Mbaye, an 18-year-old Senegalese winger. A principle agreement has been reached for a fee of €55 million (£46.5 million), according to David Ornstein of The Athletic. The personal relationship between Nasser Al-Khelaifi, PSG president, and Nassef Sawiris, Villa co-owner, is said to have played a key role in finalising the deal. Final formalities are now underway. Rafael Leão will not be joining Aston Villa, with Mbaye set to arrive in the Premier League instead.
Leão ruled out in favour of Senegalese prodigy
Villa had been among the serious contenders for Rafael Leão in recent days. Sources cited by Sky Sports and Italian expert Gianluca Di Marzio even suggested that manager Unai Emery had directly discussed his vision with the Portuguese international. However, the £46.5 million investment in Mbaye, who plays on the same left flank, shows that the Villans have chosen their long-term attacking option. This decision definitively ends the Leão pursuit, despite advanced talks. Mbaye’s arrival comes amid a turbulent summer overhaul at Villa Park. After a mass sale of the Europa League-winning squad, including Morgan Rogers, Lucas Digne, Ezri Konsa and Youri Tielemans, Emery must rebuild his team under financial constraints. With uncertainty surrounding possible departures of Ollie Watkins and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, new talent recruitment was essential.
Mbaye, long-term target, finally on his way to England
The young Senegalese attacker had been on Villa’s radar for several months. The Midlands club had identified him as a priority, though discussions had stalled early in the transfer window. Mbaye had even considered other offers from other clubs, but negotiations resumed as the deadline approached. Now 18, the prodigy is set to make the move to the English top flight, putting an end to the Leão speculation. This move is part of Villa’s forced renewal strategy, constrained by strict financial limits. The arrival of Mbaye, despite his young age, represents an ambitious gamble for a club in full reconstruction—and a response to the need for sustainable attacking solutions.
