Belgian Remco Evenepoel has unveiled an unprecedented approach to preparing for the 2026 Tour de France. The champion, who won Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2022, announced that he would not compete in any races between January and July 2026. A surprising decision that places training at the heart of his preparation. Specialized, his equipment supplier, is supporting this strategy by providing him with gear tailored to his needs.

This radical method is based on the idea that preparatory races unnecessarily exhaust riders. Evenepoel is instead focusing on weeks of intensive training at altitude and in the lab. His coaches have designed a personalized program centered on recovery and performance optimization. The Belgian aims to approach the Grande Boucle in peak physical and mental condition. His rivals may be taken aback by this approach, as they are used to seeing him compete early in the season. This strategy aligns with a long-term vision. Evenepoel, already tied to Specialized for the entirety of his career, is seeking to maximize his chances of success in Grand Tours. His technical team has analyzed data from previous editions of the Tour, identifying precise areas for improvement. The Belgian rider has even described this preparation as a “scientific project,” with measurable goals at each stage of his training. The Tour de France, the most prestigious race in cycling, demands flawless preparation where every detail matters. Reactions to this announcement are mixed. Some observers praise the boldness of this approach, while others question the risks of a lack of competition before the ultimate race. Evenepoel, however, remains convinced: “My goal is to win the Tour, not to participate in secondary races.” A philosophy that could well redefine the standards of preparation in elite cycling.
