The Sporting CP continue to shine with its ability to produce exceptional strikers. Following in the footsteps of Luis Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Rafa Leão, it is now Flávio Gonçalves (Mantes-la-Jolie, 2007) who is captivating Sporting CP. Arriving at the club's academy in 2019 from Rio Ave at just 12 years old, the young Frenchman, a Portuguese international at the U18 (13 caps), U19 (12), and U20 (4) levels, has established himself as one of Europe's top prospects.

A blazing start with the first team

After making his debut in the Taça da Liga last October by replacing Geovany Quenda, Flávio Gonçalves has confirmed his status as a future star. Starting in the first four matches of the 2026-27 Primeira Liga, he scored his first goal in a away game at Vitória Guimarães. “It’s an indescribable feeling. I’d like to dedicate this goal to everyone at the academy who has done so much for me,” he said on his social media. His impact didn’t stop there: he opened the scoring in a commanding 3-0 victory against his former club, Rio Ave, before providing a "trivela" assist to Geny Catamo. “This was my first home. I started here, and I have a lot of respect for Rio Ave. They helped me so much when I arrived from France,” he shared after the match. Rui Borges, his coach, sees him as a “destined player” despite a performance that could still improve in that particular game. “He’s growing. Unlike you, I didn’t like it.” He joked, “Of course I liked his performance. But he can still get better.” A guaranteed starter on the left wing, Flávio Gonçalves also thrives on the right and as an attacking midfielder, excelling in movement and creating space.

A technical and creative profile

Formed as a "10" in the youth categories, the young prodigy now adapts to all offensive positions. "No matter where I play: left, right… I have no preference," he assures. His playing style, both clean and bold, captivates with his ability to dribble and find spaces at the heart of the game. With a 60% success rate, he is the third most successful dribbler for Sporting CP (0.8 per match) and the second who shoots the most (2.0 per match). "We have similar characteristics, and he’s a player I admire a lot," he said about his compatriot "Pote," whom he now surpasses in the hierarchy. His chemistry with left-back Maxi Araújo, equally offensive, is one of the team’s major assets. Together, they dismantle opposing defenses. Rui Borges, who has already extended his contract until 2030, tempers his enthusiasm: "We shouldn’t get too carried away too soon." Yet, with three goals and three assists in just 11 matches, Flávio Gonçalves is already considered the new "puppy" on the rise in Portugal. ### A rise under close watch Despite his young age (19), Sporting CP has already secured his future by tying him to a contract until 2030. His potential, already praised by legends like Cristiano Ronaldo or Ricardo Quaresma, makes him one of the most watched players in European football. "My goal was to work towards playing at Alvalade," he revealed after his first match with the first team. Today, it is no longer a dream but a reality that asserts itself every weekend. As the Lisbon club relies on its youth to build a competitive team, Flávio Gonçalves embodies this new generation ready to take over. Between creativity, skill, and boldness, the French prodigy could well become, in the coming months, one of the rising stars of world football. For now, Sporting CP jealously guards its gem, while Europe’s biggest clubs begin to eye his profile. In a few weeks, the question won’t be whether he has the level, but rather when he will leave Sporting CP to join one of Europe’s top leagues. One thing is certain: his name already resonates as a promise.
