Italy's Sports Minister Andrea Abodi has categorically rejected the proposal that Italy replace Iran at the 2026 World Cup. The idea, deemed inappropriate, will not be considered for the summer edition of the tournament.

A misplaced proposal according to the minister

Paolo Zampolli, special envoy to Donald Trump, had suggested that Italy be urgently included in the World Cup. This proposal came after the Azzurri's surprising elimination by Bosnia-Herzegovina in the previous month's qualifiers. Zampolli argued that the four-time world champions had sufficient prestige to justify their participation. However, Abodi firmly rejected the idea. The minister emphasized two key points: first, such a measure was not possible, and second, it did not align with the principles governing the major sporting event. Abodi defended the competition's meritocratic nature, asserting that the rules of international sport could not be circumvented.

Merit must prevail in selection

Abodi's stance reflects a principled approach to the quality of a World Cup. According to the minister, the tournament must remain an event where access is earned on the field during qualifying matches. No exception, even for a nation with an impressive track record, could justify automatic participation. Italy's elimination represented a major setback for a team accustomed to regularly featuring in World Cups. Nevertheless, this defeat, however humiliating, does not constitute sufficient grounds to rewrite the competition's rules. The minister's firm decision thus closes the door to any debate on potential exceptions granted on an ad hoc basis, thereby preserving the sporting integrity of the qualification process.
