The second round of the Carabao Cup has been drawn, with matchups that have left many scratching their heads. At this stage of the competition, Premier League teams not involved in European tournaments enter the fray, and 11 top-flight clubs begin their campaigns before the start of September. The situation looks particularly tricky for Chelsea and Fulham, both of whom are forced to play at home.

In the southern section of the draw, the two London clubs were handed home ties against Luton Town and AFC Wimbledon respectively. A set-up that would normally not occur due to safety and transport constraints. Sky Sports has indeed chosen to schedule the Chelsea vs Fulham match on August 17 as a prime-time fixture, but tournament rules generally require a weekday slot for cup ties, with a 72-hour rest period afterward. To comply with these constraints, the Chelsea vs Brighton & Hove Albion and Fulham vs Sunderland matches have been moved to Sunday. However, this decision creates a domino effect in League One, where Wimbledon and Luton are scheduled to play league matches the Saturday after their cup ties. If the cup matches were played on Thursday, the league fixtures for these two clubs would have to be postponed to Sunday. But Tuesday, September 1 is already fully occupied by League One fixtures, which could impact four other matches, potentially moved to Wednesday. As a result, teams could end up playing two matches within 48 hours, or fans will have to adjust their travel plans. The matches affected by these postponements are as follows: Wimbledon vs Wigan, Mansfield vs Luton, Burton vs Wimbledon, Wigan vs MK Dons, Luton vs Stockport, and Reading vs Mansfield. This is not the first time the English Football League has had to make concessions to avoid fixture congestion. Since 2021, the third round of the Carabao Cup has included a seeding system to prevent clubs in European competitions from facing each other. In 2019, Liverpool even had to play a league match on December 17 at 7:45 PM before flying to the FIFA Club World Cup semi-final in Qatar the next day at 5:30 PM. The question arises: is the English football calendar too congested? Between domestic and international competitions, clubs and supporters struggle to keep up with the relentless schedule. A situation that could worsen further with the new logistical challenges posed by Chelsea and Fulham’s home fixtures.
